Thus starts Franco Moretti’s examine of the bourgeois in glossy ecu literature—a significant new research of the once-dominant tradition and its literary decline and fall. Moretti’s gallery of person images is entwined with the research of particular keywords—“useful” and “earnest,” “efficiency,” “influence,” “comfort,” “roba”—and of the formal mutations of the medium of prose.
